How It Works: It is believed that bugleweed contains simple plant acids that are thyrosuppressive. The British Herbal Pharmacopeia lists nervous tachycardia and Graves’ disease with cardiac involvement among the indications for bugleweed. It also refers to bugleweed’s actions as those of a sedative, a peripheral vasoconstrictor, and cardioactive diuretic. A general consensus about such uses of bugleweed continues to this day. Herbalist David Hoffmann, for example, describes it as a specific for an overactive thyroid especially when the condition is marked by shortness of breath, palpitations, and shaking.
Dosage:
Adults: Take 2 ml 3 times daily in a little water on an empty stomach. Not for prolonged use.
