Description Officially known as Uva Ursi, it is also known as Bearberry and Beargrape because bears like eating the plant’s red berries . The Latin name Uva Ursi literally translates to “bear’s grape.” It has been traditionally used since the second century and indigenous were known to use it for urinary infection symptom relief. The dried leaf is mixed with tobacco, known as sagack-homi in Canada and kinnikinnick among Western tribes. The Uva Ursi is a low-growing evergreen shrub. It’s said to make an excellent plant for ground cover, and it grows well in rocky soils in full or partial sun. The plant grows in a wide range of terrains, including open woodlands, sandy beaches, and even in rocky soils. Directions To make Uva Ursi tea, use 1 teaspoon of dried leaves with 1 cup of hot water.
